How do you get looked after?

Nurse WinnieThere are no cures for bleeding disorders. But there are lots of people to look after you, like your family, nurses and doctors, and us at the Haemophilia Society! And there are lots of treatments to help you too.

Treatment

Treatment is just another word for medicine! It makes you better by stopping you from bleeding.

If you have severe haemophilia, when you bleed you need to take some medicine. This medicine is called factor 8 or factor 9. You inject the factor into your body using a needle. The factor then swims all around your blood until it finds where you are bleeding from. It helps form a clot, which is like plugging a hole.

People with haemophilia are brave because they get used to using needles. As they get a little older they help their nurse or whoever injects them do the injection, and when they are older still they learn to do it themselves!

What else is there?

If you don't need to have injections, you might take tablets or have a nosespray of something called DDAVP. Otherwise you might need to rest and put ice on wherever is sore.

Doctors and nurses

Just like all other people, sometimes you will have to go to the doctor or nurse at a haemophilia centre at a hospital. This is so they can make sure your treatment works properly.
