Get on the Move

If you have haemophilia or another bleeding disorder, you may be allowed to start driving at 16. You may even get free driving lessons if you are aged 16-24.

Why? It's all to do with Disability Living Allowance. If you've been getting the higher rate with the mobility component you are entitled to starting driving when you're sixteen.

How do you get it? You will normally only get this rate if you have trouble walking for distances, even if this isn't all the time - e.g. only when you have a bleed.

Benefits in the UK are really complicated and always changing - why not contact us at the Society for up-to-date information?

Can I get a parking permit?

It's possible. The criteria for having a disabled parking permit depend on a number of factors. You can get the form from your local council and we may be able to advise you on filling it out.

Can I get a free car??

Again it depends on your circumstances. You may be able to get money towards a car or driving lessons, depending on how much you need it to get around.

What about driving with painful joints?

If you've had damage to your knees or ankles, it could make driving difficult. Some people with haemophilia drive automatic cars (without a gear stick or clutch). NB - if you only qualify to drive an automatic you aren't allowed to drive manual cars (with a clutch).

Is it just for boys?

The DLA (Disability Living Allowance) is all assessed on how easy you find it get around, or how much help you might need from your parents. So it won't matter what disorder you have, but more what your life is like.
